As evening settled on Saturday October 24th 2020, before the first frost of autumn fell, Carol Ann Johnson, 69, flew from her earthly home in Winlock Washington to her heavenly home in realms of glory to meet her Savior and Anchor of her soul, the Lord Jesus Christ.
She was born to Samuel Wilson and Marian Louise (Rybnik) Rowley on August 1st, 1951 in Long Island, NY, and is survived by her husband Thomas Ellis Johnson; two sons and daughters-in-law, James Johnson (Diana Hemken), Jeffrey (Jeannie McDougall) Johnson; seven grandchildren; six siblings; and many nieces and nephews.
She loved to read the Bible and faithfully devoted quiet time every morning to reading and prayer. She was quick to tell acquaintances about her sure hope in Jesus Christ and had a natural knack for one-on-one, heart-to-heart conversations. She loved to sing and a favorite song of hers was “I know where I’m going” (click link to hear a live, reel-to-reel recording). She enjoyed listening to music at full volume (typically while driving, rather enthusiastically), and she would often play “air violin” when in the passenger seat, to the wonder of those in cars passing by (she was first chair in High School Orchestra). However, many would say her true calling and labor of love was teaching children. She educated both of her sons through High School and taught many children in elementary education, Sunday School, and 5-Day Clubs throughout her life.
She met her husband Thomas at Pensacola Bible Institute and they were married upon graduating. They lived in the Pacific Northwest for 18 years until her husband was called to be a missionary in Papua New Guinea. There she taught hundreds of children in Sunday School over the next 17 years. Those who were not able to go to public school, she took under her wing and gave them an elementary education. Some of those children have since succeeded to high school and beyond in a culture where few young men and women do. Upon retiring from the field in 2013, she continued to help teach Sunday School at her local church until the onset of Lou Gehrig’s disease. She was an enduring and engaging teacher, a loving mother and aunt, and a best friend and wife. Her love lives on in lifted lives.
A private interment service will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, November 4th 2020 at Willamette National Cemetery in Happy Valley, Oregon. A public memorial service will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 14th 2020 at Faith Baptist Church, 436 Coal Creek Rd. in Chehalis, Washington.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made, care of Faith Baptist Church, to the Sunday School Ministry in Haniak Village, Papua New Guinea
